developed as part of a game engine) is available on

http://vrmlengine.sourceforge.net/view3dscene.php

This release brings a lot of new features. The complete list is
currently visible on the main page (http://vrmlengine.sourceforge.net/).

- The best new feature is probably the "screen effects". These are
effects that process the rendered screen by shaders, allowing for a lot
of neat effects like flashlight, color tricks, warping the view and
such. view3dscene includes some built-in effects (see "View->Screen
Effects" menu).

The most exciting fact is that you can define your own screen effects by
a new ScreenEffect node. This has a "shaders" field where you can place
your shaders, just like standard "Appearance.shaders". So you can
provide your own GLSL code and make any effect you like, using color and
depth buffer contents as input.

http://vrmlengine.sourceforge.net/kambi_vrml_extensions_screen_effects.php
contains the complete documentation.

- Newly handled nodes include PlaneSensor, SphereSensor, CylinderSensor,
ClipPlane, ColorRGBA, Billboard, ViewpointGroup.

- Major optimizations to Transform animation, and many fixes and
optimizations to other nodes.

- Examine camera works better now. Smooth transition between viewpoints
are done.

- User interface is improved (toolbar, with most important buttons, is
avilable; tooltips for Examine / Walk / Fly buttons describe the camera
controls.)

...............................................................

Web3D and OGC to build cohesive standards for location-based 3D Web visualization services

Menlo Park, Feb 2, 2010 - The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) and the Web3D Consortium have updated their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperatively advance their standards to support Web-based 3D visualization, modeling and simulation. The updated MOU includes membership sharing between the two organizations with a strong determination to build cohesive, durable standards that complement each other well. This agreement will enable OGC and Web3D Consortium members to each collaborate in common Working Group development activities. The goal is to align the Web3D Consortium’s X3D standard with OGC standards to improve location-based 3D visualization.

As 3D becomes more and more accessible to end users, Web3D and OGC envision the synthesis of 2D maps with 3D immersive worlds. X3D is seen as an excellent, stable open standard for 3D geospatial data portrayal. The inclusion of interactive Internet-based 3D graphics will provide geospatial users with a richer and more compelling experience. Among the many benefits of this collaboration will be improved location-enabled 3D web portrayal services to support architecture planning, engineering, climate prediction, security, defense and intelligence.

Mark Reichardt, President of OGC, stated, "OGC is pleased to renew its alliance partnership arrangement with the Web3D standards organization. The work of the OGC and Web3D Consortium complement each other, each addressing different problems to meet shared community needs for 3D information management, fusion, visualization, analysis and modeling."

The two groups met at the 71st OGC TC/PC meeting in Mountain View California in December 2009 to discuss the strengths of X3D as a 3D presentation/portrayal systems for OGC standards. Discussions were also held on how to integrate X3D with other OGC standards such as City GML. As a direct result of these meetings, Web3D member company Planet 9 Studios (www.planet9.com) was invited to develop X3D-based flight interfaces as part of OGCs’ 2010 OWS-7 test bed project. Key sponsors of this test bed include key agencies such as the FAA, Eurocontrol, NOAA and NGA. Planet 9 CEO, David Colleen, said “We look forward to adapting X3D to the demanding needs of flight planning and control including cutting-edge weather simulation, in-flight information, and high-resolution geographic depiction.”

"According to our customers, X3D brings new 3D visualization and interactivity capabilities into GIS applications in combination with OGC's CityGML format," according to Peter Schickel, Vice President of Web3D Consortium and CEO of Bitmanagement Software GmbH (www.bitmanagement.com). His company's new whitepaper regarding Online Geo Visualization describes multiple working applications for consumer and GIS use-cases.

“This alliance is important to both organizations," noted Alan Hudson, President of both Web3D Consortium and Yumetech Inc. (www.yumetech.com) "Industry definitely needs collaborative open standards for location-based interactive 3D visualization, benefitting users with a richer and more meaningful geospatial experience.”
Where does this story take place I hear you say - in the new IT Building in University College Cork, Ireland. In fact this story begins in the Department of Computer Science, where I lecture.

The VR room is a relatively large room (compared to other labs in the building). The room is notionally divided into four equal parts. Much of the activity to be undertaken in this space involves polarized 3D projection, so it was important to have as much control over the light in the room as possible. To this end, all surfaces in the room, apart form the floor, are painted black. The lighting in the room is divided in to four zones, each zone has individual on-off controls, and is dimmable.

One zone is intended for our large-format 3D projection system, while the other three zones are composed of various workstations for head-tracking, gesture-based interaction, BCI, 3D Digitization, motion tracking, and other VR related activities.

The first part of building the lab involves the setting-up and configuration of the 3D projection system. Our system is a rear-projection dual head circular polarized system. (At a later stage I will list the individual devices and models.) Anyone who has set one of these systems up before will testify that the most difficult part of the setup is the calibration of the projectors. In fact there is so much too it, that I will cover it in another post.

Below are some images from the first couple of days setting up the lab.

Much of the material was a re-hash of what is widely known in the research community about the state-of-the-art in VR. I persisted with the program as it contained an interesting interview with Jaron Lanier
However watching the show got me thinking about the list of movies that have been and continue to be important in influencing developments and research in VR. Here is a list of some notable movies:
Seminal Hollywood moments that have been influenced by, or have influenced developments in technology.
Some of them were standard VR text books bought from high-street bookstores, others were a little more difficult to source and usually involved some haggling on eBay.

The purpose of this series of posts is to share my thoughts on these books with you and to see if they correspond or not with your own thoughts on these books.

We seem to be on the cusp of another VR era - could we possibly call it a renaissance?
We have learned a lot since the 1980s and the hype that surrounded VR, which was also helped along by Hollywood (examples include Lawnmower Man and the Matrix).

Hopefully my meagre effort here will help us to move forward in a more measured, considered way, so that we don't fall in to the 1980's trap of believing that this is the second coming (in computing terms of course).

I'll start the ball rolling by listing the books that I have to hand.

So much so, that the number of VR environments have exploded in recent months.

Look at this from Tech Crunch:

Virtual Worlds Are So Hot Right Now: $345 Million Invested So Far This Year
I feel like today is Virtual World Day. We started off the morning covering the public beta launch of Vivaty, then Second Life and IBM announced that they bridged two virtual worlds, and Google launched its own version of virtual worlds with Lively.

If it seems like everybody is starting their own virtual world, it is because they are. A report put out today by Virtual Worlds Management tracks $161 million put into 14 virtual-world investments during the second quarter of 2008. In the first quarter there was even more activity, with $184 million put into 23 virtual worlds and supporting technology companies. That brings the total this year alone to $345 million across 37 deals. This is indeed a sad occasion, as Randy is only 46 and is suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer.

The lecture follows the tradition of (hypothetical) farewell lectures by distinguished speakers at Carnegie Mellon. The main difference this time is that this is very much a 'real' farewell lecture from Randy.

Randy is a distinguished published speaker on many of the positive aspects of interactive systems and games - in particular the educational benefits.

A video of the lecture is available for viewing.

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture

rgds Dave

...............................................................

He believes that since WWII technological development has been growing at an exponential rate and that he can't see where the future is heading in this crazy maelstrom of change.

Read the interview at:

http://networks.silicon.com/webwatch/0,39024667,39168006,00.htm

Dave

...............................................................

The shame of it ;)

Well, I came across this piece about CAVEman and this spurred me on to blog about it.
Basically, the guys at the University of Calgary spent a few years (six to be precise) to build an anatomically correct model of the human male and are using their CAVE to enable researchers to explore their implementation of the human model.

This high resolution model can be sized to any scale, and display the entire model or select regions of it.

read more about it here:
CAVEman

...............................................................

The module is called "Field Research in Second Life" (Multimedia 490, MM 490) and will initially be limited to 8 students. The module objectives are:

1. teach real world field research (communication ethnography) techniques.
2. adapt real world field research techniques to a virtual environment.
3. examine the potential of immersive online communities as teaching and learning environments, both for BU/MM and for New Media Consortium and its partners/sponsors.
4. expose BU/MM students (as future MM producers) to an immersive, online, 3D environment that has purposes in addition to/other than gaming.

This is truly a new departure and Ed should be commended for taking this `leap'.

It would be nice if Ed were to publish a post-module evaluation so that we can see if this is a viable medium for teaching and learning.

Dave

...............................................................

The company also issued an open call for participation in an industry forum at www.ajax3D.org, dedicated to the research and development of online virtual worlds using 3D open standards and Ajax best practices.

Ajax3D combines the visual richness and interactivity of X3D, the ISO standard for networked 3D graphics, with the ease of use and ubiquity of Ajax, a set of Javascript and XML programming methods for developing web applications. Ajax3D employs the X3D Scene Access Interface (SAI) for controlling 3D worlds within a web browser via Javascript. Ajax3D content can be viewed with any web browser with an X3D-compliant plug-in.

VR
Ajax3D
X3D

...............................................................

Another impressive aspect of this programme is the group running the degree have a very strong research track record.

This is one that I will be recommending to my students when they are looking for an MSc in this field.

Dave

...............................................................

It aims at conformance to the X3D spec while maintaining high performance using OpenGL hardware acceleration, and it implements CADGeometry, DIS, GeoSpatial, H-Anim, as well as extensions for Rigid Body Physics, Particle Systems, Clipping planes, Picking Utilities, Abstract Device IO. Mac OS X users can explore any VRML or X3D model, as well as incorporate the technologies into their own applications. Xj3D is free for Mac OS X (Java 1.4.2 or greater), Linux, Solaris, and Windows.

Hopefully now we will see some momentum gather and X3D will at last take off.

Dave

...............................................................

As a result, members of the VR Research communiity have to rely on websites, etc. to stay up-to date with the latest developments.

This year I have noticed that old 'stalwarts' seem to be fading away. For instance http://www.vrsource.org/ and vrnews have effectively ceased operating.

The only reliable VR news website that I have come across recently is a site developed by Laurel and Leonard Daly, http://www.e3dnews.com/ . However, the turnover of news material is rather slow. The last posting was 7/22/2005.

Hopefully, this blog will go someway to address this shortfall and help to generate interest amongst and within the VR Research community again.

rgds Dave

http://multimedia.ucc.ie/Public/MSc/cs4054.shtml
http://multimedia.ucc.ie/Public/Research/SurViz/index.shtml

...............................................................
